$6M Michigan Mansion Has 'Prepper' Bunker With Beds, Gun Range: Photos
Situated between Kalamazoo and Jackson, in a rural part of Battle Creek, Michigan, the owners spent more than $10 million developing this eye-catching property, said realtor Mary Noneman.
Now, just a few years later, it's on the market for $5,999,999.
Why so cheap?
"It's just market conditions," Noneman told Insider.
Nonetheless, she said the "beautiful, beautiful property" could make a special home for a VIP buyer, with some pretty unusual features inside.
In addition to the main house, there are three other dwellings (and that's not including the bunker) — the White House, the Lake House, and the Stone House.
The White House could be used by a nanny or a caretaker, while the two-bedroom Lake House could be another revenue stream, Noneman said.
"If it were me, I probably would 'Airbnb' it," she said, adding that it could also be sold off as a separate property.
The decks at the back of the manor house, which span over three levels, offer sweeping views over the expansive grounds.
The main-floor patio wraps around the entirety of the home, offering different vantage points for enjoying the property's lake.
"It's a very beautiful space for entertaining and throwing parties," Noneman said.
The foyer is double height and has a white marble floor, setting the tone for the grand aesthetic of the rest of the house.
"It's a very majestic entrance when you enter the home," said Noneman.
"Everything is gourmet," said Noneman, describing the high-end appliances that are built into the kitchen, which also has a pantry and coffee nook attached.
What makes it special is that it's open to the other living spaces, she said, allowing guests to see what's going on in the kitchen. "So if you have a chef that's there cooking for your dinner party, it would be very engaging," she added.
There's a formal dining room, pictured, for special occasions, which comes with crystal chandeliers.
But for a more relaxed meal, there's also a separate family dining room.
Off the main floor, next to the grand foyer, is a large office with mahogany woodwork, its own fireplace, and a custom wooden arched entryway.
"It has a 'boss' feel to it, that's for sure," said Noneman.
The property has two spacious living rooms, one of which has double height and large windows. This means there's a lot of natural light in the manor's social hub.
Noneman said the focal point of the room is "a very majestic fireplace."
In addition to the large primary bedroom, which has an ensuite bathroom and outfitted walk-in closets, there are three additional bedrooms in the main house.
Noneman said it could comfortably sleep at least eight people, with the additional dwellings providing room for many more guests.
Including the garage, the manor has 13,788 square feet of space.
The bathroom has "his and hers" elements, coming with two separate showers, as well as a large soaking tub.
"The bathroom is about the size of a normal bedroom, and it all overlooks the lake, which is absolutely gorgeous," Noneman said.
The lower level of the manor would give a health club a run for its money, with Noneman describing it as having the atmosphere of going to a "spa."
There is both a dry and infrared spa, as well as a steam room.
"You have everything within your home for all the luxuries that you typically go outside of your home to participate in," Noneman said.
She described how in addition to the spa facilities, there's also a gym, a yoga/dance studio, and an inground indoor lap pool with a treadmill and whirlpool.
On the lower level, near the spa facilities, there's a movie theater.
It comes with reclining leather chairs and cup holders.
The underground bunker is vast and private, with two entrances, one of which is concealed.
"I think it's so that they can get in and out without people knowing exactly where one entrance is," Noneman said.
Noneman, the realtor, said she's not sure why the bunker was built, but she believes there is a market for properties that come with one.
"I do know that there are preppers that are out there in the world," she said. "Bunkers are becoming a little bit more normal, just because of the way that the world is going."
Noneman added that some people are keen to "safeguard" themselves against a possible nuclear war by building or buying underground bunkers.
The realtor said that it is "fully equipped" for off-grid living, coming with two kitchens, two living rooms, three bathrooms, and four bedrooms.
Some of the bedrooms include bunk beds, which means that at least 12 people could comfortably live in the bunker, Noneman said.
Preparing for a zombie apocalypse, or just wanting to practice your aim without waking the neighbors? Either way, an underground shooting range could be the ideal property feature.
Noneman offered little explanation as to why the current owners built a soundproof gun range in the bunker, but said that there was a market for such features.
"The buyers that are interested in the property are interested also in that feel of the bunker," she told Insider. "So there's not a lot of explaining that you have to do because it's already within their mindset and their culture."
Indoor plant beds with growing lights could be used to cultivate cannabis, but the realtor said they were built for something a little more practical.
"I believe that their intent was to be able to grow their own vegetables and food if they did have to live underground," said Noneman.
"The commercial greenhouse, I think it's definitely a showcase piece for anybody that's wanting to homestead," Noneman said.
It has a sprinkler system and raised garden beds, and a gated garden area next door to it has chicken coops for people wanting to raise animals.
"It's such a massive piece of property that until you see it in person, the pictures don't even do it justice," Noneman added.
The home is set off of the road by about half a mile, meaning that you "cannot even remotely get a glimpse of the home from the road," said Noneman.
It's an "extremely private" property, she added, noting that it comes with a video surveillance system and gated entry.
This level of privacy means that it could be ideal for a celebrity or other public figure, Noneman said.
"So any type of celebrity that just wants to get away and bring their entourage, give them spa treatments, or show them movies," she said.
So far, there's been tentative interest, Noneman said, while adding that a sale for a property this size often takes a long time to complete.
